The northeast had a huge snow storm this weekend, as you probably know. This was one of the worst weekends ever - we weren't prepared for the storm. Our snow-blower didn't work and we lost power. We just installed a standby generator a couple of weeks ago but it didn't work.
We spent the Saturday night without power and the electrician came out and it turns out the generator was not activated. Also, the battery was dead. We jump-started battery with the car battery and activated it and found the battery has issues because the generator would run for an hour and then die. We'd charge it with car battery again and it would die again.
We bought a new battery late Sunday night and installed it and it ran for 9 hours overnight, thankfully. But Monday morning, the battery's low again. It looks like the battery is not getting charged from the propane so the generator stops working.
Overall, we were not as bad off as some people but it was quite stressful. One lesson learned - expect the worst to happen and try to be prepared.
